Kindergarteners have been hard at work in the art room learning new skills and processes: from printmaking to painting and stitching! Andy Warhol's "Flowers" print inspired this striking printmaking project. Kindergarteners used a piece of cardboard to print the grass background and made their own stamps out of foam to print their flowers on top. Kindergarteners created a symbol for the season of Spring and then stitched a border around their painted symbol.
Just had to share these scrumptious, Wayne Theibaud-inspired cupcake sculptures my littles at the Mint Museum after-school art club made! They look good enough to eat (but I wouldn't recommend it!)
Faith Ringgold inspired this mixed-media Second grade project. We read her dream-like book, "Tar Beach" and then students came up with an illustration for a story that either really happened to them or that they had dreamt about. Their illustrations show the setting, characters and action in their story. Then they created a fabric border much like the one's Faith Ringgold used on her story quilts.
Here's yet another project inspired by a sweet book! Karen Katz's "The Colors of Us" talks about the different beautiful skin colors of the character's friends and family members and how we're all different and beautiful! After reading the book first graders got to try to mix their own skin tone using red, blue, black, brown and white. It was a little tricky, but I was proud of them for their perseverance! After creating their skin color they painted on their hair and used oil pastels to draw their facial features while carefully observing using a mirror.
I picked up some really great books at our book fair this Fall and was inspired to create some art projects based on the illustrations featured in them. I love the message of Todd Parr's book "It's Okay to Be Different!" and my Kindergarten kids did too! They created this awesome collaborative mural using painted paper collage. Second Grade Donut Printmaking and IllustrationAnother book that inspired us was "Please, Mr. Panda" by Steve Antony. Second graders used pool noodles to make an half dozen donut prints, then glazed and frosted using tempera and puffy paint. They had so much fun! Then to create contrast with their colorful donuts they illustrated a black and white animal to offer you some donuts, just like in the story...just remember to say "please!" Third grade Collaborative Poinsettia Flower ArrangementKindergarten Self Portraits as Gingerbread PeopleThird grade students used liquid watercolor and glue to create the feeling of a crisp Fall breeze in the background for the leaf prints they created using a foam printing plate and markers in Autumnal colors. Third Grade Tree WeavingThe year is off to a great start! During the first week of art class we did a little getting-to know-you business and then lots of messy work creating beautiful painted papers that we will use in projects later in the year. This year our Kindergarten through Third graders are participating in Square One Art. This year instead of doing self-portraits like Selwyn students have done in the past, we've decided to switch things up a bit and each grade level is focusing on an animal as the subject of their first official art project!
