Here's yet another project inspired by a sweet book! Karen Katz's "The Colors of Us" talks about the different beautiful skin colors of the character's friends and family members and how we're all different and beautiful! After reading the book first graders got to try to mix their own skin tone using red, blue, black, brown and white. It was a little tricky, but I was proud of them for their perseverance! After creating their skin color they painted on their hair and used oil pastels to draw their facial features while carefully observing using a mirror.
